The Pyramids of Giza
The pyramids were built
over four thousand five hundred years ago. They are in Egypt on the west banks
of the Nile River. They were built by the ancient Egyptians called the pharaohs.
Pyramids were meant to be giant tombs for the kings of Egypt. They store all
their wealth with them in the pyramids when they die.
There are three pyramids.
The first one is called Khufu known as the Great Pyramid. It is the biggest and
oldest of the three. The pyramid was built by King Khufu, the second king of
the fourth dynasty.
The second one is called
Khafre. It is the second biggest pyramid. It was built for the fourth king of the fourth
dynasty, King Khafre. It is special retaining some of the original limestone
rocks from around 4500 years ago. Khafre Complex includes, in addition to the
pyramid, a small temple on the road leading down to Sphinx.
Finally, Menkaure. It has
more complicated burial chambers than those of Khafre. These contain several
decorated panels lined with massive granite blocks. His sarcophagus was
discovered inside but was lost at sea in 1838 as it was being transported to
England.
Although we have explored
many things, there are still many unanswered questions. Where are the bodies of
Khufu and Khafre? Where are the workers' bodies? Maybe the coming years will answer these
questions, or maybe the Pyramids of Giza will keep their secrets forever.
